The whooping cough epidemic: A wake-up call on immunizations

Whooping cough may sound like a disease from our grandparents’ time, but, unfortunately, we are seeing a surge of cases right here in California. Whooping cough is a contagious disease that can be easily passed from person to person. It’s very serious for babies and can cause them to cough so much that they cannot breathe. Hundreds of babies are hospitalized each year for whooping cough, and some even die from it.

Budget season is upon us once again here in California and once again, lawmakers in Sacramento are charged with closing a $19.1 billion budget gap. Rather than doing the same thing over and over again, we need to enact some real, lasting reform. We need to fix California’s budget crisis once and for all so we’re not faced with fixing a failing budget again next year.

Senator Tony Strickland discusses two pieces of his legislation which would help close the budget gap. Senate Bill 71, signed into law in late March, provides tax incentives for manufacturers of renewable energy technologies that locate in California or remain in California. Senate Bill 835 would create the Bureaucracy Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC), which would help streamline overlapping or obsolete government bureaucracies.
