Senate Budget Vice Chair Responds to Opinion Issued Concerning Assembly Democrats Borrowing Scheme

Thursday, June 17, 2010

Senate Republican Leader-elect Bob Dutton (R-Rancho Cucamonga) issued the following statement today in response to the Office of the Attorney General’s written opinion that the Assembly Democrats’ budget borrowing scheme violates Proposition 58:

“It was clear from the beginning that the Assembly Democrats’ proposal was just another multi-billion dollar gimmick that is not only illegal but makes next year’s budget deficit even worse. I’m happy to see that the Attorney General’s Office agrees with this view that is shared by me, my Republican colleagues and the governor.

“Instead of trying to figure out ways to once again kick the deficit into next year, now is the time for the Legislature to enact structural reforms that will permanently bring California’s spending in line with revenues. We should not only be looking for ways to reduce spending, but also looking to remove the government-imposed burdens that are killing private businesses in this state. If we do that we can increase revenues the right way – through private sector job creation, rather than an illegal borrowing scheme that would only make California’s budget problem worse.”
