Senator Cogdill to Lead New Select Committee on State Surplus Property

Senator Dave Cogdill, of Modesto, today was named by Senate President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg to serve as chairman of a new select committee to review the state’s surplus properties.

“This committee will play a pivotal role in helping the state continue to find ways to save money during these tough economic times,” said Senator Cogdill. “With my background in the real estate appraisal business combined with my knowledge of resource conservation issues, I am honored to serve as chairman of this important committee.”

The Senate Select Committee on State Surplus Property will:

  • Consider the current land use regulations associated with each property.
  • Examine the current operational costs and deferred maintenance costs.
  • Review the method by which the state appraises properties.
  • Conduct an examination of the pros and cons of selling existing fee-title to lands versus purchasing conservation easements.
  • Provide necessary oversight to facilitate the sale or lease of surplus property.

“By working with the various state agencies that manage surplus properties, I believe that this new select committee will prove to be a valuable resource as the Legislature develops and implements a strategy for disposing of unneeded assets,” Cogdill continued.

Senator Cogdill proudly represents part or all of the counties of Fresno, Madera, Mariposa, San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Tuolumne.
