Governor Takes Action on Bills Impacting the Valley
Of the 707 bills that reached Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s desk at the end of the legislative session, 478 were signed and 229 were vetoed. But, it doesn’t beat Governor Schwarzenegger’s veto record set last year, which was the second highest since 1967. In 1990, then Governor George Deukmejian set the record of most vetoed bills, by rejecting 436 bills.
Here is a roundup of some of the legislation the Governor acted upon this year:

Madera County Applauds Vote Against Local Fund Raids
Recently, I was proud to receive recognition from the Madera County Board of Supervisors for my opposition to a proposal to balance the state budget by permanently taking local gas tax funding. The Board of Supervisors approved a resolution that recognized me for my “tireless efforts to seek solutions to balancing the State’s budget that would have less impact on local government” and for “courageously” voting against this proposal.

UC Merced Plays Role in Expanding Access to Rural Health Care
A medical school at UC Merced could play a role in expanding rural access to health care. Currently, the San Joaquin Valley has 31 percent fewer primary physicians and 51 percent fewer specialists than the rest of the state.
A community listening tour is making a stop in Mariposa County where residents can make their voices heard regarding the planning of the UC Merced Medical School.
The meeting will be held:
Wednesday, October 21
6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Mariposa County Government Center
Board of Supervisors Chambers
5100 Bullion Street
Mariposa, CA

Helping Constituents Navigate the Maze of State Bureaucracy
Delivering results for constituents is one of the most rewarding parts of my job serving as your State Senator.
A short time ago, a farmer came into my Ripon office and to tell us about a problem with a special license renewal for a 1950 truck that he only uses a few weeks a year during harvest season. He primarily drives on his property but occasionally he helps fellow farmers and drives the vehicle on county roads.
The truck was licensed “special use” in 2000 and he paid the renewal fee several years ago but never received the tags for the license plate. We contacted the DMV and within a few days, they resolved the issue.
My staff and I are here to help you navigate through the maze of state bureaucracy. Please contact me if you need help with state issues.
