Message from Tony

Today, California is squeezed between an economic crisis and an energy crisis that requires us to fundamentally rethink how we do business.

That’s why my top priority as your state senator is to work towards the elimation of government waste, fraud, and abuse and to promote job creation through transitioning California to a renewable, more energy-efficient economy to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, improve the environment, and lower energy prices.

I hope you’ll take a moment to read about what I’m fighting for on behalf of my constituents. Please feel free to contact me at (805) 306-8886 or on my website at www.senate.ca.gov/strickland if you have a problem with state government, or a question about an issue.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Tony Strickland

Strickland Gives Commencement Speech
Southern California Institute of Law

Institute of LawOn Saturday, June 13, Senator Tony Strickland delivered a commencement speech to the Southern California Institute of Law graduates in Santa Barbara. He was also privileged to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Law. Senator Strickland’s speech focused on leadership and the ability for strong leaders to rise up in troubled times. He spoke in remembrance of the D-Day Invasion into Normandy, France on June 6, 1944 and the men who fought to defend our freedom to ensure freedom for all future generations. He also spoke about the injustices and prejudices which haunt us today. In conclusion he called on the graduates to respond to the needs of others with compassion, understanding, and tolerance, and to use their degree to better our society.

Nevada looks pretty attractive compared with California
By Senator Tony Strickland

As published in the Ventura County Star on June 25, 2009.

Just the other day, I came across one of those stress-relief, hand-squeeze balls, except this one was tan and shaped like a peanut and read, “NEVADA DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY 888-4-NO-TAXES (http://www.nevadadevelopment.org).”; I went onto its Web site and a picture popped up about moving to southern Nevada. Then, an image of a young couple with a baby and words like “no income taxes,” “labor,” “lifestyle,” “cost of living,” “ technology” and “transportation” flashed across the screen. By the time I was done exploring the site, southern Nevada was looking like a pretty attractive place to live.

In addition, last week, I stumbled across an article in The Sacramento Bee: “Golden state losing folks as old Dust Bowl beckons,” http://www.sacbee.com/ourregion/story/1944947.html: “As California housing prices went wild in the middle of this decade, hundreds of thousands of residents scratched their heads and moved to places where homes were still affordable, state and federal statistics show. When prices started falling and unemployment started rising, many continued to leave California for healthier job markets.”

There is no question California has entered a rough patch. However, which direction legislators choose to go from here can make a world of difference.

Sacramento tries again to pass budget

"The last thing we need for Californians is to raise their taxes. Hardworking Californians didn't cause this problem," said State Senator Tony Strickland (R) of Moorpark.
(Featured by ABC 7 KGO-TV San Francisco, and ABC 10News Sacramento, June 26, 2009)

The news keeps getting more dire. Personal income and corporate taxes keep dropping, adding to the state's financial woes.

"We have another shortfall, just in the month of June alone of $1.1 billion. So as you can see, our revenues are still falling and we have not bottomed out," said California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R).

The drop in taxes adds even more urgency for lawmakers to fix the state budget which is now more than $24 billion out of balance.

Strickland throws out Ceremonial First Pitch at The Miracle League

Miracle LeagueOn Saturday, June 27 Senator Tony Strickland kicked off The Miracle League baseball game by saying a few words and throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. At the end of the game Senator Strickland handed out metals to all of the players.

The Miracle League was formed in 1998 when the Rockdale Youth Baseball Association wanted to further its mission by providing youth baseball to all children regardless of disabilities. When the league first began it consisted of 35 players on four teams. In an effort to expand The Miracle League to Ventura and other places in the county, the First Assembly of God Church in Ventura has taken up this cause with plans to build a permanent Miracle League field that will include a flat, rubberized field that is more conducive to the needs of the players. Pastor Tony Cervero and the First Assembly of God Church have a property in Ventura designated for this baseball field but since it has not yet been built, Coach Magdaleno ( Ventura College coach/Magdaleno School of Baseball) agreed to host an event at the Ventura College field where many of his players assist with the game and baseball clinic.
