Message from Tony
September 11, 2009 marked the end of a difficult legislative session for the State of California. I am proud to announce I authored seven, mostly cost-cutting and political reform bills that passed both the Assembly and Senate - four of those bills are awaiting the Governor’s signature for approval.
Legislation of interest awaiting the Governor’s signature:
-
Senate Bill 37, which saves the state as much as $3.7 million annually by instituting direct deposit for state employees.
-
Senate Bill 619, which provides support for funding Santa Barbara County’s Lower Mission Creek flood control project, an ongoing project for the past 15 years.
-
Senate Bill 739, political reform legislation which prohibits a spouse or domestic partner of an elected official or candidate from receiving compensation in connection with fundraising.
Legislation of interest already signed into law:
- Senate Bill 63, eliminated the Integrated Waste Management Board which paid members $132,178 a year to meet one or two times a month.
While I am pleased to have seven of my bills pass the Legislature, deep frustrations still exist because we have yet to accomplish a fundamental fix to our budget problem and cut additional wasteful government spending.
I look forward to spending some much needed time in my district with constituents over the next few months. However, I am eager to be called back to Sacramento for a special session so we can work on restructuring our broken tax code and fix California’s ongoing budget problem.
As your Senator, I will work with Democrats, Republicans, and the Governor to find a solution we can all agree on. It won’t be easy, but we must encourage job growth in addition to changing our tax structure in order to solve the state’s economic situation.
I hope you’ll take a moment to read about what I’m fighting for on behalf of my constituents. Please feel free to contact me at (805) 306-8886 or on my website at www.senate.ca.gov/strickland if you have a problem with state government, or a question about an issue.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Tony Strickland

Strickland Appointed to Renewable Energy Committee
September 4, 2009, Senator Tony Strickland (R-Thousand Oaks) was appointed to the newly formed Senate Select Committee on Renewable Energy. The eight member panel has been directed to study policy and implementation issues affecting renewable energy, sustainable energy production and use, distributed generation, and energy efficiency.
"I'm honored to be selected as a member of this committee. California has long been an innovative leader in clean energy production," Strickland said. "We need to use this valuable committee as an opportunity to make solid policy recommendations that will grow our economy and get Californians back to work."
Senator Strickland authored SB 463, SB 534, SB 542, SCA 13, all aimed at the promotion and production of clean renewable energy. All four of the bills would have provided new jobs to Californians who desperately need them, but they were defeated in committee.

Strickland Responds to California’s 12.2 Percent Unemployment Rate
California’s Unemployment rate reached 12.2 percent in September, 2009, according to the Employment Development Department’s website, while nationally the unemployment rate rose to 9.7 percent. Californians continued to lose their jobs at an alarming rate, with another 49,000 jobs lost during this month alone. The year-over-year change (August 2008 to August 2009) shows a decrease of 741,500 jobs (down 5.0 percent).
The numbers released are just a further example of why jobs must be the top priority of the California Legislature. Now more than ever we must do everything we can to protect the jobs we have and stimulate new job growth.
The recent state unemployment numbers underscore the need for policies that harness the power of the private sector to help create jobs and spur entrepreneurial spirit throughout the state.
As your Senator, I will continue to fight against wasteful spending and legislation that inhibits business growth. Californians want to get back to work, and Sacramento needs to get serious about making California’s economy competitive again so that can happen.

Legislator sits down for coffee with constituents

As published by the Moorpark Acorn on September 18, 2009.
Most people who attended the community coffee gathering hosted by state Sen. Tony Strickland in Moorpark this week wanted to discuss general policies to solve long term state problems, but Simi Valley resident William Bussard had a more immediate concern in mind.
The local Caltrans employee, who sustained a concussion and several other injuries when someone ran into his truck while he was working on the 118 Freeway in Moorpark last spring, wanted Strickland’s help to cut through red tape he encountered while dealing with a state funded insurance program.
