Governor signs Huff Legislation to Protect Disabled Veterans from Fraud and Abuse

Program Helps California Veterans Find Work

Sacramento — Governor Schwarzenegger today signed Senate Bill 548, legislation authored by Senator Bob Huff (R – Diamond Bar) to put a stop to fraudulent abuse of working disabled veterans.

The California Disabled Veteran Business Enterprises (DVBE) program is a highly successful, twenty year running program which offers work projects contracted by the state to disabled veterans. The program has ensured financial security and independence for countless veterans across California. As the economy continues to struggle, the DVBE program has become even more imperative for veterans.

In all too many cases, however, disabled veterans find themselves defrauded by contractors who commit to using a veteran’s service, but refuse to use the veteran on the project.  Worse yet, some veterans are contracted to work on a project but do not receive payment.

SB 548 protects those at home who have protected us abroad by ensuring veterans are awarded both the agreed upon work and pay when hired by a contractor.

“I am pleased the Governor has joined me today in recognizing those who have selflessly fought and sacrificed for our freedoms,” said Senator Huff.  “These heroes deserve our utmost admiration and this legislation honors that tradition.”

SB 548 received broad bipartisan support and will officially become law on January 1, 2010.

Senator Bob Huff serves as the Senate Republican Caucus Chair.  He represents portions of Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties.  You can follow Senator Huff on Twitter @bobhuff99.
