Dutton Report

Biography

Senator Bob Dutton proudly represents California’s 31st State Senate District which includes portions of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.

First elected to the State Senate in 2004, Senator Dutton won a second in November 2008 when he captured nearly 60 percent of the vote.

Born and raised in Lincoln Nebraska, Senator Dutton moved to pursue the California dream in 1969.

He proudly served in the Army Reserve, was a member of the California Air National Guard, and was honorably discharged in 1974.

Shortly after moving to California, Senator Dutton enrolled at Los Angeles Valley College in their Associate of Arts program, majoring in real estate and graduating in 1972. It was while at LAVC that his passion for politics and service to others began.  He won two terms as the Student Body Association President. In addition, Senator Dutton began what would be a life-long commitment to giving back to the community, a value instilled by his father; he joined the local Kiwanis Club, and in 1976, became the club’s president.

Using his entrepreneurial spirit, Senator Dutton opened a real estate investment and management firm, Dutton & Associates, Inc, located in Rancho Cucamonga where he currently serves as CEO. In addition to being a member of a number of professional organizations, he has served as president or board member for numerous community and civic organizations including the YMCA, Red Cross, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Community Foundation. Senator Dutton has also dedicated much of his time to volunteering as the coach of his daughter’s fast-pitch softball team. He coached dozens of girls who later received scholarships and went on to play college softball.

Senator Dutton won election to the Rancho Cucamonga City Council in 1998 and won re-election in 2000. As a member of the council, Dutton worked to increase the number of police officers and fire fighters without raising taxes. He also led the fight to eliminate the city’s Utility Tax, which was abolished in 2001.

His experience as a local elected official and business owner, led to his election to California’s 63rd State Assembly District in 2002.  In 2004, he won election to the State Senate.

As a member of the Legislature, Senator Dutton has a strong record of fighting tax increases, believing that the best way to increase revenues is through the creation of jobs. He has said many times “the best social program is a good paying job.”  Senator Dutton also worked to help revamp California’s broken worker’s compensation system.

In 2006, he carried the Governor’s transportation bond. Senator Dutton’s efforts during that negotiation resulted in billions of dollars of infrastructure projects throughout the Inland Empire.

With the on-going state budget shortfalls, Senator Dutton has been working tirelessly to stimulate the economy, retain and create jobs, cut government red tape and pass budget reforms that will bring California’s spending in line with revenues.

Senator Dutton has received many honors including; Legislator of the Year by the California League of Cities, the California State Sheriff’s Association, the California Small Business Association and the California Small Business Roundtable.

Senator Dutton married his wife, Andrea Guillen, in 1981. Andrea, a fourth generation Chino resident, is the Department Director of Radiology at Chaffey Community College. Senator Dutton and Andrea have a daughter, Kara, who graduated from Cal State San Bernardino in 2006, and is now working in the banking industry.
