Today, the Governor created a pathway towards implementing a 33 percent green renewable energy portfolio standard by 2020. Senator John J. Benoit (R-Bermuda Dunes) offered the following statement:
“California possesses the natural geography, technological expertise and entrepreneurial spirit necessary to lead the nation and the world in renewable energy production. Governor Schwarzenegger’s action today can lead our State toward a cleaner, more reliable energy future.
“The RPS legislation forwarded to the Governor in the last hours of the legislative session would have potentially saddled ratepayers with tens of billions of dollars in excess costs. That path would have further crippled our already struggling economy. As I said on the Senate floor, California could have become ‘The greenest Third World economy in the world.’ Today, the Governor set California on a more thoughtful, balanced path toward achieving a 33% renewable energy goal. I’m confident that our State’s businesses and workforce will answer the challenge – leading California to a brighter, cleaner future.”
