Every week I read examples of the waste and mismanagement of taxpayer dollars in newspapers and watchdog reports.
Here are just a few examples that have caught my attention:
The Los Angeles Times exposed $500 THOUSAND in cellphone waste at the welfare department in LA County. This lack in oversight lead to abusive practices, like placing expensive calls abroad.
Signon San Diego found it was costing taxpayers $460 TO REPAIR A SQUEAKY DOOR!
Blind to the state’s budget crisis, Los Angeles built the Taj Mahal of schools. The cost for this palace? OVER HALF A BILLION DOLLARS, the most expensive school in the country!

It cost over a half billion dollars to build this Taj Majal

Each example demonstrates the need for additional oversight in all areas of state government.
Oversight, auditing and accountability are among the most important components of good government, but surprisingly, these fundamentals are seldom addressed by the Legislature. We need more than an audit for one-time savings. My proposal, Senate Constitutional Amendment 1, is designed as a mechanism to systemically evaluate state programs. Unlike other performance reviews in the past, this measure requires that the Legislature integrate the findings of audits into specific proposals to improve government. Rigorous third party audits will show taxpayers that government is spending their money wisely.
