California Coastal Commission Now Becomes Judge And Jury

Ruling Party Votes to Give Unelected Board More Power with No Accountability
Friday, September 6, 2013

Moments after the California Senate voted along party lines to increase an unelected government agency more regulatory powers with no public accountability, Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) issued the following statement:

“We care deeply about our environment and protecting California’s incomparable coastline, but the ruling party just passed another bill that only reinforces this state’s lawsuit-friendly reputation.  AB 976 creates more regulation and gives too much power to the California Coastal Commission - and even more power to unelected staff members.  They will ultimately make recommendations on fines and penalties to a part-time Commission, allowing them to act as judge and jury.  It will do nothing more than create a ‘bounty hunter’ to generate revenue for this organization.”
