SACRAMENTO – Senate Republican Leader Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) released the following statement on the passing of former California Governor George Deukmejian:
“I'm saddened to learn of the passing of one of California's most effective and popular governors in George Deukmejian. He was a man of integrity who fulfilled his commitment to keep Californians safe by successfully reforming the state’s criminal justice system. He fought hard for what he believed in and earned respect across the political spectrum for his willingness to address tough challenges, such as balancing the state’s budget.
“While Governor Deukmejian will be best remembered for his accomplishments as governor, he was also a successful attorney general and legislator, where he served as Senate Republican Leader from 1975 to 1979. I believe his success as governor was made possible by the wealth of experience he gained in the Legislature and Attorney General’s office. He emerged as the most prominent Armenian-American politician in the United States.
“Tonight, my thoughts and prayers are with Governor Deukmejian’s family as they mourn his passing,” said Senate Republican Leader Bates.
